Windhoek Namibia

Windhoek is the capital as well as the economic and political centre of Namibia. The city is located in the Windhoek valley, the almost central geographical point of the country, surrounded by the Eros mountains in the east, Auas mountains in the south and Khomashochland in the west and in the north. Windhoek was first discovered in 1840 and was established as a modern city in 1890. Windhoek has approximately 330 000 to 400 000 residents and an annual population growth of roughly 12 000 people.

Sightseeing

The most famous landmarks of the city are the "Alte Feste", which hosts the National Museum of Namibia, and the Lutheran Christuskirche which was completed in 1910. You also have to view the "Reiterdenkmal" which was moved to a new location because of the new Independence Memorial Museum building.

Other sites that are worth a visit are as follows:

  • the Roman Catholic St. Marie's Cathedral in Windhoek, built in 1908
  • the Turnhalle (gymnasium), where the constitional Turnhalle alliance conference took place
  • the Alte Brauerei (Old Brewery), the former business premise of the Namibian Breweries
  • the Tintenpalast (the ink palace), as well as
  • the three city castles Heinitzburg, Schwerinsburg and Sanderburg.

You should also visit the Tukondjeni Market or the Penduka Project Centre within the densely populated suburb Katutura und Khomasdal. The National Heroes Acre is located outside of the city.
